Abstract

A two-week workshop on the Ousmane Sembène archive (Lilly Library) and the Paulin Soumanou Vieyra archive (Black Film Center & Archive) was held at Indiana University, Bloomington from May 27 to June 6, 2025. The Early African Cinemas Lab, run by Professor Vincent Bouchard, organized the workshop, bringing together roughly a dozen academics and researchers. Participants had the opportunity to further explore the legacies of these pioneering figures in African film history. A collective book of the workshop proceedings will be published at the end of the year. The two filmmakers' sons were present, interviewed here by Saïba Bayo (camera) and Olivier Barlet.
