La traduction interlinguale dans les méthodes de FLE et d’ELE – tradition ou (r)évolution ?

The article aims to present the place and role of interlingual translation in the currently used methods of teaching French (FFL) and Spanish (SFL) in secondary schools in Poland. The author draws attention to the historical ambivalence towards translation in foreign language teaching and emphasises that, despite criticism, its potential in foreign language teaching is gaining importance, especially in the context of the task-based approach. The results of the contrastive, quantitative and qualitative, analysis of 40 methods show converging trends in FFL and SFL methods. Translation is used more often, but in a traditional way, as a means of language teaching aimed at consolidating vocabulary and grammar. The potential of translation for communicative purposes, in line with the task-based approach, has not yet been sufficiently exploited.
