Abstract

Abstract Internet of Things (IoT), which connects various devices to the Internet and enables data exchange is attracting increasing attention. Several restroom status monitoring systems using IoT technology have been proposed. This paper proposes a toilet paper monitoring system that uses magnetic sensors. The system consists of a magnet affixed to the paper-cutting plate and a Hall effect sensor attached to the toilet roll holder to detect the position of the paper-cutting plate and obtain the toilet paper status. The system determines the remaining amount of toilet paper by monitoring the stationary position of the paper-cutting plate and assessing the usage status based on the vibrations measured on the plate. Additionally, the system can detect instances of theft, mischief, and excessive use of toilet paper using measured data and promptly alerts the user with beep sounds and visual displays. The obtained data are sent to a PC via Bluetooth. Thus, this system can be considered useful as a toilet paper monitoring system.
