Abstract

OBJECTIVES This study evaluates advertising's influence on self-medication and consumer knowledge of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. It examines how advertising encourages consumption, impacts choices, and assesses knowledge of adverse effects and reporting mechanisms.

METHODS An anonymous online survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. Out of 137 participants from Marseille, Saint-Joseph, and social media. The questionnaire explored self-medication habits, information sources, and knowledge of OTC medications. 102 responses were analyzed.

RESULTS Nearly 70% of participants self-medicate, mainly for headaches, colds, and stomach aches. Advertising influences choices for 22% of them but doesn't guarantee comprehensive knowledge of dosages, contraindications, or side effects. Furthermore, adverse effects linked to the consumption of these products were identified but not reported to pharmacists or appropriate authorities. Additionally, some participants received no information or advice upon purchase.

CONCLUSION Advertising does not necessarily alter the frequency of self-medication but influences consumer choices towards specific products. Nevertheless, an important proportion of participants lack sufficient information about the medications they purchase. Therefore, reinforcing the pharmacist's role in advising and informing consumers is crucial to promote responsible and safe self-medication.
