Abstract
For research on regional languages, the rapid development of AI technology in recent years offers significant innovative potential. At the same time, the discipline carries a particular responsibility when it comes to representing regional language in the digital sphere. The digital transformation confronts the field with three overarching development goals: (1) harnessing the potential of AI, (2) depicting cultural diversity, and (3) shaping digital transformation responsibly. This position paper defines these developmental goals and, through an assessment of the current situation, outlines the prerequisites and conditions currently in place for the use of AI-based methods in the field. The resulting challenges and desiderata lead to central guidelines that support these goals. Finally, concrete recommendations present measures for advancing research on regional languages.
