Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examined how global classroom quality and individual classroom experiences relate to children’s language and math development over a year in a Head Start program. Specifically, it focused on children’s unoccupied-disruptive behavior during whole-group and free play activities and social interactions during transitions and mealtimes. The sample included 420 preschoolers (mean age: 48 months; range: 36–61 months) from 60 classrooms across nine centers in 2018. Of the children, 54% were boys; 45% were Latino, 29% Black, 11% White, and 15% other ethnicities. In terms of language background, 60% were English monolinguals, 35% were Spanish-English dual language learners, and 5% spoke other languages. Research Findings: Global classroom quality, shared among all children in a classroom, was not significantly linked to language or math outcomes. However, individual unoccupied-disruptive behavior during whole-group time was negatively related to gains in vocabulary and math skills. Positive social interactions during transitions and meals predicted improvements in expressive vocabulary. Unoccupied-disruptive behavior during free play was not directly associated with outcomes, but it moderated the link between global quality and children’s math gains. Practice or Policy: These findings underscore the importance of individual classroom experiences in shaping academic outcomes, even within the same classroom setting.
