Abstract
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical efficacy of recombinant human type III collagen supramolecular assembled hydrogel in the treatment of skin chronic sinus wounds.METHODS: Twenty-one patients with chronic sinus wounds who were treated in our department from November 2019 to August 2021 were enrolled in this study. After the infections were controlled and the necrotic tissues were removed, the sinus tract was filled and smeared with recombinant human type III collagen supramolecular assembled hydrogel. The wound was externally covered with two layers of Vaseline coarse mesh coated gauze, and the dressing was changed every 2-3 days, with a 2-week treatment cycle. Dressing changes, tension reduction sutures, and split-thickness skin grafts were carried out based on the wound conditions. During clinical follow-up, the treatment method, wound healing status, healing time and recurrence of the wound were recorded, inflammatory reactions and bacterial cultures were assessed every week. The collagen in the recombinant human type III collagen supramolecular assembled hydrogel was tightly arranged and ordered, exhibiting a honeycomb microstructure with rich three-dimensional spatial network structure, good water absorption, and dynamic viscosity.RESULTS: Effective treatment was observed in 19 cases, including 13 cases of simple dressing changes, five cases of tension reduction sutures, and one case of split-thickness skin grafting. Fourteen patients healed after one hydrogel filling, and five patients healed after two hydrogel fillings. The average healing time was 18.3 days. There were two patients with wound inflammation in the 1st week, one of whom had bacterial cultures positive for Staphylococcus aureus. After treatment with a dressing change, no wound inflammation appeared in the 2nd week, and the bacterial culture was negative. During the follow-up period of 3-17 months, there was no wound recurrence among the 19 patients. Two patients in whom treatment was ineffective treatment withdrew from the study. Recombinant human type III collagen supramolecular assembled hydrogel, as a new type of active biomaterial with non-animal-derived components and standardized preparation, can be used for the treatment of chronic sinus wounds to accelerate wound healing and improve the quality of healing. CONCLUSIONS: This study analyzed the clinical efficacy of recombinant human type III collagen supramolecular assembly hydrogel in the treatment of 21 patients with chronic sinusitis. Recombinant human type III collagen supramolecular assembled hydrogel, as a new type of active biomaterial with non-animal-derived components and standardized preparation, can be used for the treatment of chronic sinus wounds to accelerate wound healing and improve the quality of healing.
