Abstract
<jats:p> In this article, we provide a necessary and sufficient criterion for proper actions on <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>ℍ</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:math> in terms of certain special Anosov representations in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi mathvariant="sans-serif">SO</mml:mi> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> . Moreover, we show that affine Anosov representations of any word hyperbolic group in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi mathvariant="sans-serif">SO</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo>⋉</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>ℝ</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> are infinitesimal versions of such special Anosov representations. Finally, using the above two results we interpret Margulis spacetimes as infinitesimal versions of quotient manifolds of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>ℍ</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:math> . </jats:p> <jats:p>In the appendix, we give a description of the appropriate cross-ratios in our setting and their infinitesimal versions.</jats:p>
