Abstract
<jats:p> Let <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>≥</mml:mo> <mml:mn>3</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> , and let <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo form="prefix">Out</mml:mo> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> be the outer automorphism group of a free Coxeter group <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> </mml:msub> </mml:math> of rank <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> </mml:math> . We study the growth of the dimension of the homology groups (with coefficients in any field <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mi>𝕂</mml:mi> </mml:math> ) along Farber sequences of finite-index subgroups of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo form="prefix">Out</mml:mo> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> . We show that, in all degrees up to <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>⌊</mml:mo> <mml:mfrac> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:mfrac> <mml:mo>⌋</mml:mo> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> , these Betti numbers grow sublinearly in the index of the subgroup. When <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>𝕂</mml:mi> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mi>ℚ</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> , through Lück’s approximation theorem, this implies that all <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>ℓ</mml:mi> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:msup> </mml:math> -Betti numbers of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo form="prefix">Out</mml:mo> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> vanish up to degree <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>⌊</mml:mo> <mml:mfrac> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:mfrac> <mml:mo>⌋</mml:mo> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> . In contrast, in top dimension equal to <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> , an argument of Gaboriau and Noûs implies that the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>ℓ</mml:mi> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:msup> </mml:math> -Betti number does not vanish. We also prove that the torsion growth of the integral homology is sublinear. Our proof of these results relies on a recent method introduced by Abért, Bergeron, Frączyk and Gaboriau. A key ingredient is to show that a version of the complex of partial bases of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> </mml:msub> </mml:math> has the homotopy type of a bouquet of spheres of dimension <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>⌊</mml:mo> <mml:mfrac> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:mfrac> <mml:mo>⌋</mml:mo> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> . </jats:p>
