Abstract

Isophorone is an important motif in synthetic organic chemistry, as it is highly reactive and can get involved in a diverse array of functional group transformations to access various synthetic intermediates and molecular targets. In this context, an important group of compounds is the conjugated or nonconjugated isophorone‐cored dienones, which are primarily obtained from either aldol condensation or coupling reactions of isophorone or its related derivatives with other appropriate reactants. Alternatively, the isophorone‐cored dienones are prepared from the synthetic manipulation of other suitable precursors such as dimedone or obtained from the cyclization of linear polyenyne reactants to provide the 6‐membered ring backbone. In the present review, the essence of over 200 related publications is summarized to comprehensively update the available literature information on the synthesis, reactivity scope, and various applications of the isophorone‐cored dienones.
