Abstract
This article characterizes, contextualizes, and compares two projects aimed at promoting, disseminating, and making Central American art visible between 1950 and 2010, through the cultural management efforts of Cuban critic and curator José Gómez Sicre (1916–1991) and Costa Rican curator and manager Virginia Pérez-Ratton (1950–2010). It seeks to determine how their efforts and strategies converge or diverge, how they are similar or different, how each conceived of the Central American region, and what type of art they promoted. This analysis reveals that Central American art has been in a constant state of evolution and that its discussion and dissemination have been part of a sustained global effort that we still have limited knowledge of. Through this brief review of two individual projects, it is possible to identify the different contexts, characteristics, and objectives that have shaped and continue to shape the historiography of Central American art.
