Litewskie powroty Józefa Mackiewicza. Transmisja pamięci o Józefie Mackiewiczu w niepodległej Republice Litewskiej

This article is devoted to the issue of transmitting the memory of Józef Mackiewicz in the independent Republic of Lithuania (after 1990) and the activities (practices of engagement) accompanying this process. It is an empirical study analysing journalistic and academic content, public speeches, documents, as well as forms of commemoration and their reception, and it applies concepts and terms established in memory studies, such as memory transmission, memory communities, and practices of engagement. The analysis considers the following aspects of memory transfer: the senders and recipients of messages (i.e. who are the primary and secondary participants in the act of communication), the content of messages (i.e. what is communicated), the forms and strategies of relations (i.e. how they are transmitted), as well as the stimulation and use of information by the current memory policy. For the purposes of this article, the general question posed in memory transmission studies has been specified as follows: What ideas (goals) had the strongest impact on individuals and social groups and most effectively supported actions (practices) aimed at restoring the memory of Józef Mackiewicz in the independent Republic of Lithuania? The question of a common goal is fundamental: it is a question of social cohesion and bonds, of the level of integration of a given community in the name of the effective fulfilment of its own mission.
