Pulp Fiction, Home Goods, and 1920s Cocktail Culture; or, Who was Shirley Paine?

abstract:Florida author Charles H. Baker, Jr. (1895–1987) is best remembered today for The Gentleman's Companion, a two-volume exotic cookery and drinking book published in 1939. Baker was also a writer of magazine fiction, a novelist, and, in the late 1920s, the owner of a New York furniture store. This article discusses how the relation between Baker's many identities can be traced and illuminated in the periodicals archive.
