Abstract
The average American student spends 73,860 minutes in compulsory education in a year—nearly a million minutes from kindergarten through graduation. At the heart of Jonathan Gyurko’s new book, Publicization , is the central question: What is the purpose of the almost 1 million minutes the American student spends being educated? He posits that a more clearly defined “public education” will serve as a clearer contrast in the face of the “privatization” project that has impacted it for the past 60 years. Publicization fills this void by issuing a new term that functions both as a concept and a process. According to Gyurko, the failure to define the public pursuit of education has led to its purpose being misunderstood and, more troublingly, its value inadequately defended.
