Redoing gender in lifestyle migrant women: From Spain to Greece and vice versa

Lifestyle migration, characterized by the pursuit of a better quality of life, opens space to rework identity within new cultural and institutional settings. Using a feminist gender lens, this study examines how lifestyle migrant women moving between Spain and Greece negotiate and transform gender roles. Through semi-structured interviews with 27 migrant women and by focusing on the interplay between personal, interactional and institutional gender levels, the research shows how mobility enables empowerment or compels adaptation. Two Southern European destinations that share regional features yet differ in their institutional gender regimes are compared, showing that migrant women’s redoing of gender takes different forms in each context.
