How Did We Get Here? Teen Vogue’s Coverage of Dobbs and The End of Roe v. Wade

Abstract:This article examines Teen Vogue’s coverage of the 2022 Dobbs decision which effectively overturned Roe v. Wade, thereby ending fifty years of abortion protections for women and pregnant people in the United States. I examined thirty-six editorials and op-eds via TeenVogue.com published between January 2022 and December 2023. I argue that Teen Vogue provides readers with nuanced information about abortion access and bodily autonomy. Additionally, the magazine challenges postfeminist ideas of equality and freedom of choice by clearly delineating how the Dobbs decision will negatively impact girls, women, and pregnant people indefinitely. Lastly, the magazine encourages readers to become politically engaged in ensuring abortion access by highlighting specific actions they can take.
