Prescriptivism as language conservatism

ABSTRACT The paper argues that institutional ‘usage-guide’ prescriptivism should be regarded as a manifestation of political conservatism in language and outlines the commonalities between the two ideologies. While similarities between ‘usage-guide’ prescriptivism and political conservatism are quite glaring, the idea has gone practically unaddressed in the literature, except in passing and sometimes even dismissively.
