The Figure of Apollo-Nabû and the Graeco-Mesopotamian Ideological Dialogue

This article aims to present evidence that suggests Apollo was the Seleucid monarchy’s patron and to analyse scholarly arguments about the assimilation process between Apollo and Nabû and its implications. The discussion also focuses on the function of religious beliefs in intercultural interactions involving Graeco-Macedonians and Mesopotamians. Additionally, the study examines the use of such beliefs as a means of strengthening the sovereign’s legitimacy. In summary, it is intended to show that the Seleucid imperial propaganda aimed to influence both the Graeco-Macedonian and native populations. This explains why the dynasty addressed Mesopotamian subjects according to their cultural frameworks.
