Epidemiological survey of mental disorders in people aged 18 or over in Hebei Province

Abstract

Objective To describe the current prevalence and distribution of various types of mental disorders in Hebei Province.Methods From Oct.2004 to Mar.2005,24 000 subjects aged 18 years or over were sampled out in Hebei Province.An expanded version of the General Health Questionnaire was used to identify subjects at high,moderate and low risk for having a mental disorder,then psychiatrists made diagnoses according to the fourth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder(DSM-IV) criteria after conducting a structured clinical interview(SCID).Results(1)In 20 716 subjects completed the screening,the overall current rate of mental disorders was 162.43%o(95% CI=15.8%-16.7%),and major depressive disorder(27.01%o),unspecified anxiety disorders(25.09%o)and dysthymic disorders (23.12‰)occupied the preceding position.The overall hfetime prevalence of mental disorders was 185.12‰(95% CI=18.0%-19.0%),and major depressive disorder(47.47‰),alcohol dependence and abuse disorders(38.62‰),and unspecified depressive disorder(25.51‰)occupied the preceding position.(2)The overall current prevalence of mental disorders was higher in rural(165.63‰)than in urban areas(144.31‰),and in women(167.95‰)than in men(156.95‰)(P0.05-0.01).The prevalence increased with aging,137.17‰-156.71‰ in 30-49 years,and 201.44‰-285.41%o in 50~≥ 70 years.Conclusions Through the investigation,we know about the current prevalence and the eharacteristic of distribution of various types of mental disorders in Hebei Province,which provides scientific data for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders.
