tlooto Summary

A 2009 article proposes a reflection on 'domesticating work' by exploring care's material, moral, and emotional dimensions, extending the concept of work to acknowledge its social value.

Abstract

article proposes a reflection on the possibilities of the theoretical tool "domestication of work", whereas it constitutes a useful conceptual proposal to rethink the different types of work, as well as their social value when incorporating, beside the material aspects, the emotional and moral dimensions. For that purpose, the debate that is multiplying the analysis spheres, the debate about care, is studied. First of all, a reflection on the limitations about the concept 'work' in order to understand the complexity and specificity of 'care'. Secondly, the notion of care is explored, while it includes in its analysis the three dimensions previously indicated (material, moral and emotional). Finally, the model of social care is proposed as a way of reflection on the moral responsibility of care and its social value (recognition). Care allows to extend the 'work' concept, it contributes to 'domesticate' it.
