Osteoarthritis has long been viewed as a degenerative disease of cartilage, but accumulating evidence indicates that inflammation has a critical role in its pathogenesis, and increasing insight into the inflammatory underpinnings of OA holds promise for the development of new, disease-modifying therapies.
