Gender role perceptions positively impact work-life balance of married female workers through mediation by 4 work satisfaction sub-variables
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the gender role perceptions of married female workers on the promotion of work-life balance. The study examined the mediating effect of work satisfaction using the parallel multiple mediation model. Data from the sixth and seventh Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (KLoWF) were examined. The analysis found that the gender role perceptions of married female workers positively impacted nine sub-variables related to work satisfaction (wage or income level, employment stability, work content, working environment, working hours, personal development potential, workplace communication and relationships, welfare benefits, and performance recognition). Four of these sub-variables (wage or income level, work content, workplace communication and relationships, and performance recognition) had a statistically significant effect on promoting the work-life balance of married female workers. In addition, these sub-variables mediated the effect of gender role perception on promoting work-life balance. The differences between these effects were not significant, and an indirect mediation path appeared as the main one promoting work-family compatibility. Because this study examined the importance of each work satisfaction sub-variable, it has implications for the development of policies and programs promoting work-life balance among married female workers.
