Baekje royal family mourned for 28 months after King Muryeong's death, with a unique funeral service called Bin-jang and Deunggwandaemeou.
Abstract
In China, mourning for three years(三年喪) has been performed. It has been performed precisely for twenty seven months of mourning. According to the memorial stone of King Muryeong[武寧王] and his queen's tomb of Baekje also use to practice this tradition. But Baekje had a special funeral service, namely Bin-jang(殯葬), which buried a dead body in a mortuary until the mourning finishes in three years. Therefore, King Muryeong and his queen's mourning lasted not for twenty seven but twenty eight months of mourning. The difference of one month was due to Bin-jang and Deunggwandaemeou(登冠大墓) which was performed on the 28th month after the 27th month's Dam-jae(禫祭), the 27th month's mourning. According to Nihon Shoki(日本書紀) King Seong(聖王) of Baekje goes through twenty-seven months of Bin-jang. In the same 27th month, Dam-jae and Deunggwandaemeou was carried out. King Wedug(威德王) didn't formally come to the throne for three years, which lasted for twenty-seven months. But
in fact, he tided over the difficult political situation with holding the mourning rites.
