Corn shoot mitochondria possess an energy-linked transport system for sulfate uptake as demonstrated by osmotic swelling and [(35)S]SO(4) (2-) accumulation, and it is concluded that sulfates uptake in the absence of phosphate is by the phosphate transporter.
