Work-family spillover and perceived fairness of workplace impact female managers' career prospects.
Abstract
This study examines why women have not reached the top administrative positions at workplace. Using the data of Korean Women Manager Panel Survey(2nd Wave), this study investigates the effect of three factors including work-family spillover, perceived fairness of workplace and hourly wage on female managers' career prospect. Also this study delves into the differences by children's age. A total of 929 married female managers were included in the final analysis. The study results are as follows:First, work-family positive spillover and personnel evaluation justice had positive effect on female managers' career prospect, and family-work negative spillover and sex discrimination of workplace had negative effects on female managers' career prospect. Second, for female managers who have child(ren) under 3 years, family-work negative spillover had negative effect on career prospect. This study pointed out the female managers have serious barriers in labor market participation and career development overall. In conclusion, based on the above findings, family members' support and family friendly policies at workplace will be pivotal in reconciliation of work and family life, and effective use of women manpower.
