Abstract
Abstract : The research consisted of two distinct but interrelated problems. First, the researchers performed the research necessary to establish and describe a set of metrics and theorems for Low Probability of Intercept Waveforms. This led to the development of a design and analysis methodology and capability for Low Probability of Intercept signals and systems. This methodology and capability resulted in an algorithmic approach to LPI design and is composed of two primary elements - an analytical-based, computer-aided system to evaluate the detectability of LPI waveforms, and computer simulation models which allow the LPI communication link to be simulated and evaluated against the effects of Jawing and intercept receivers. Secondly, as these tools were being developed, the researchers conducted basic research into the design of the next generation LPI waveforms and possible strategies for detecting them. The two research tasks were complementary effects. This research effort had elements of both basic and applied research. The theorems and metrics led to the development of a tool to analyze waveform detectability which will serve two functions. It can be used as a design instrument for the engineer who must select the most effective LPI modulation technique for a given system: and furthermore it can also be used to facilitate basic research in the area of waveform detectability
