Abstract

This article analizes the principle and problems of the interculturalism for social integration model in multicultural age. In our recent society, some insists that interculturalism should be concerned as an alternative of multiculturalism which faces in failure or reach the limit. But this article emphasizes to focus on the role of both multiculturalism and interculturalism with complementary view rather than the view that the interculturalism replaces the multiculturalism. Interculturalism is the ideology that tries to creat a sharing common culture through a dialogue and mutual respect beyond the mere coexistence of diverse cultures. Communication and mutual relation of individual and cultural group are the core of the intercultural discussion. Interculturalism tries to find a new identity based on intersubjectivities and to be the energy that harmonized with cultural divisity. Interculturalism is based on phenomenological understanding of culture, interactions of cultures, and creation of sharable culturality. These factors of interculturalism need ethics about human respectivity and willingness to understand and embrace cultural diverisity. Interculturalism should avoid the change of cultural heterogeneity to differences and consider carefully the ethics that recognize and coexist on the religious identity of minorities. Multiculturalism focus the ‘recognition and coexistence of differences’. In contrast, Interculturalism empasizes ‘mutual and open dialogue and communication’. But interculturalism and multiculturalism are the ideological basis that manages the cultural diverisity for the new social intergration. The core things we should focus are the resolving conflicts, the way of recognition, the increase of communication, and the spread of shared good. Two isms are the paradigms which should be in harmony as ideological resources for the social intergration in the multicultural age.
