spelled differently each time they appear. A curious example is a letter published by the ‘Yidisher Emigrant’ in 1912. The translator, misjudging the vowels, places the writer in Ravenna (!) instead of Rovno in Volhynia (p. 207f). Many letters have no date. One author gives the ‘1837th year of our exile’ as date (p. 116). The reader learns nothing about the meaning of this phrase, let alone the actual date when the letter was written.
