In recognition of its generalized pleiotypic actions, sulfation factor was renamed somatomedin (mediator of the effects of somatotropin) and was included in the emerging classification of broad spectrum growth factors along with platelet derived growth factor, fibroblast growth factors, and epidermal growth factor.
