The previous edition of this book, published ten years ago, was an outstanding and unqualified success. In the last ten years the subject has expanded so greatly, experiences have multiplied so considerably, and a vast literature has grown up around it so that it is scarcely possible in a book of similar size, whilst endeavouring to bring it up to date, to present the subject in such an authoritative way as was formerly the case. The authors have, moreover, been handicapped by the retention of many antiquated woodcuts and by a natural reluctance to part with descriptions of procedures (such as drilling of the antrum through the alveolar border with a large trephine) that have long since had their day. Nevertheless, it has been found possible to mention almost all the most recent methods and developments, both with regard to diagnosis and treatment, although the authors often refrain from committing themselves with regard to their value or otherwise and seem to wish the interested reader to draw his own conclusions from the original papers on the subject, full references to which are provided in every case.
