The scientific literature is examined to explore and highlight the scientific facts concerning medicinal properties of H. erinaceus and two classes of terpenoid compounds, hericenones and erinacines, from fruiting bodies and cultured mycelia, respectively, have been found to stimulate nerve growth factor synthesis.
