Engineering salt tolerance in plants.

The identification of the different sodium transporters (in particular vacuolar and plasma membrane Na(+)/H(+) antiporters) that could provide the needed ion homeostasis during salt stress opens the possibility of engineering crop plants with improved salt tolerance.
