Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common, occurring in more than 15% of patients admitted to hospital as an emergency. AKI often indicates severe systemic dysfunction and can lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and increased mortality. Early proactive recognition, prevention and activemanagement can reduce the incidence of AKI. Contrast-associated AKI (CA-AKI) is typified by a deterioration of renal function in the days after intravascular injection of a contrast agent. Historically, the prevalence of CA-AKI was thought to be substantial, and considered to be a direct effect of iodinated contrast agents.
