Abstract

In the petroleum industry, the first applications of geostatistical methods appeared with the use of the kriging technique for mapping horizon depths, seismic velocities, layer thicknesses or petrophysical properties such as porosity or permeability (Haas and Viallix 1976). The maps obtained were then used as input to the calculation of volumes of hydrocarbons in place, or to reservoir simulation programmes (Haas and Jousselin 1976).
