African Cities: Alternative Vision of Urban Theory and Practice

This book is a critique of the contemporary theoretical discourse on urban studies based on the Western experience. It aims to use African urban concepts and experiences to ‘speak back’ to current concerns about both ‘African Studies’ and ‘Urban Studies’. Most of the literature on urban social studies focuses on American or European experiences and models and positing these as universal values. These values are then utilised for comparison and contrast with ‘other’ urban experiences.
