Effect of metformin combined with behavioral intervention on body weight increasing and glucose and lipid metabolism disorder of schizophrenic patients

Objective To observe the effect of metformin combined with behavioral intervention on body weight increasing and glucose and lipid metabolism disorder of schizophrenic patients. Methods One hundred and twenty schizophrenic patients were divided into treatment group and control group. The patients in treatment group were treated with olanzapine, metformin and behavioral intervention; the patients in control group were treated with olanzapine only. The body height,body weight,fasting blood glucose( FBG) and blood fat of all patients were measured before treatment and the 4th,8th,12thweeks after treatment; then the body mass index( BMI) and the number of body weight increased 7% at the 12thweek after treatment were calculated. The positive and negative syndrome scale( PANSS) was used to assess the curative effect before and after treatment. Results There was no statistic difference of body weight,BMI,FBG,total cholesterol( TC),triglyceride( TG),high density lipoprotein( HDL) and low density lipoprotein( LDL) among each time point in the treatment group( P 0. 05); but there were statistic differences of above indexes in the control group( P 0. 05). At the 4thweek,there was no statistic difference of body weight and BMI between the two groups( P 0. 05); but at the 8th,12thweek,there were statistic differences of body weight and BMI between the two groups( P 0. 05). There were statistic differences of FBG,TC,TG,HDL and LDL at each time point between the two groups( P 0. 05). At the 12thweek after treatment,ten patients( 16. 7%) body weight increase 7% in treatment group while thirty-six patients( 60. 0%) body weight increase 7% in control group,there was statistic difference between the two groups( P 0. 05). There was no statistic difference of incidence of adverse event between the two groups( P 0. 05). Conclusion Metformin combined with behavioral intervention can lighten the increased body weight, blood glucose and blood fat induced by olanzapine in schizophrenic patients.
