Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma associated with HIV infection

Objective To research the association between conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma and HIV infection.Methods The blood samples of 53 cases with conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma were taken for HIV testing. Their ages ranged from 20 to 54 years old. Age matched controls were chosen from the patients with other eye diseases. The blood samples of the controls were taken for HIV testing in same way.Results Forty two(79.24%) of 53 cases with conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma were seropositive compared with 14(28.57%) of 49 cases in the controls, significant difference was found (χ 2=26.41,P0.01).Conclusion Apart from the role of solar ultraviolet radiation, HIV infection is an important factor to induce the development of conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma.
