Serious adverse reactions associated with Albendazole

Abstract
Objective Understand the serious adverse reactions associated with albendazole and make the suggestion to avoid them. Method Searching Chinese Journal Full-text Database from 1994 to 2004 and getting 40 literatures and 100 cases associated with albendazole. Results Serious ADR appeared in the patients taking albendazole. Encephalitis syndrome was the most common (41.8%), then allergic shock(16.4%), influenza-like syndrom(7.3%), allergic purpura(6.4%), drug rash(6.4%), acute hepatic injury(5.5%). Other rare ADR include alopecia, hematuria, gastrorrhagia, hypersensitive enteritis, optic neuritis, heart block, epilepsy seizure, hyperpyrexia and left lower extremity tic. Conclusion People and physicians should pay attention to ADR associated with albendazole and the ADRs should be monitored continually.
