Although not cheap, the new Cambridge edition of Kant's translated works is extremely handsome; prospective buyers may be forgiven for contemplating investment in the envisaged fourteen volumes for aesthetic reasons alone. The present volume, which contains Kant's practical philosophy, was translated by Mary Gregor who died shortly before completion of the entire manuscript. The translation of two remaining, relatively minor pieces — the Hufeland review and two letters by Kant entitled 'On turning out books' — was taken over by Allen Wood in his capacity as general editor together with Paul Guyer. It is also Wood who pays tribute to Gregor's contributions to Kant scholarship as researcher and translator; to her important early work on the Metaphysics of Morals, as well as to her 'uncanny ability to render Kant's meaning into readable and even elegant English' (p. xi). Readers familiar with Gregor's 1991 translation of the Metaphysics of Morals will feel confident about the high quality of her final and outstanding contribution to Kant scholarship.
