introduction Ahlstrom states that events of the sixties have driven us to ’an awareness of historiographical crisis’ and that ’events have so radically transformed the American situation that our whole view of what is relevant in the past must be revised’ (12). This sweeping statement would seem to promise a new historical interpretation based upon a periodization determined by the decisive significance of the decade of the sixties. What are we to say to this? The new historical interpretation is simply not forthcoming. Ahlstrom’s volume does not mark a new interpretation of the past but the best of the old.
