Ideology of Translation vs Translation of Ideology: A Study on the Notion ofldeology in Translation Studies

I . Introduction Relationship between translation and ideology is manifold. Thanks to the previous studies of some Translation Studies scholars for instance Lefevere (1989), Hermans (1985) and Venuti (1995) etc., the important role of ideology in Translation Studies has been well recognized. Translation is no longer deemed as a merely linguistic transference. Instead it is a social-historical phenomenon in which different ideologies and conflicts encounter with each other and a translation is thus the result of their reconciliation. As is pointed out by Fawcett, "throughout the centuries, individuals and institutions have applied their particular beliefs to the production of certain effects in translation". (2004: 1 07) In other words, ideology is highly influential in both translators' decision-making process and reception of the target texts.
