Brecht entre théâtre et roman

The purpose of this essay is to study the movement to-and-fro in Brecht between the theatre and the novel. It first points to the decisive influence of Alfred Doblin the novelist on the Brechtian working out of the theory and practice of the theatre. Then, starting from a concret example – Die Geschafte des Herrn Julius Caesar –, it studies the transposition of the various devices of the epic theatre into fiction to create what might be called an “epic novel”.
