Confusion in the Bipolar World: Bashed Pebbles and Splintered Pieces

The Native American Studies Program sponsored by the Northwestern Archeological Program and Foundation for Illinois Archeology will conduct "Lithic Technology Workshops" this summer, July 20-24 and August 10-14 at the Kampsville Archeological Center in Kampsville, Illinois. The workshops will be directed by Greg Thomas. Workshop participants will visit quarry locations and will quarry flint using prehistoric techniques. They will learn about heat-treatment techniques, manufacture a flintworking tool kit, and learn the techniques for making a variety of stone tools and weapon types used prehistoricaliy. Participants in the second workshop may wish to arrive early to see flintknapping demonstrations on August 9 and 10 by several noted flintknappers. These sessions will be the culmination of a week-long "Flintknappers Symposium" in Kampsville, where noted flintknappers will exchange ideas on stone tool manufacturing techniques.
