Abstract

Highlights • We collected more than 4500 drought events, at global scale, from 1951 to 2016.• We identified the biggest 52 mega-droughts occurred in 1951–2016.• In the last decades, Amazonia, southern South America, Mediterranean region, most of Africa, north-eastern China stand out as drought hotspots.• Over North America, central Europe, central Asia, and Australia, the progressive temperature increase outbalanced the increase in precipitation causing more frequent and severe droughts.• The interactive version of the database is hosted by the European Commission's Global Drought Observatory.
