La nación en la España del siglo XXI: un debate inacabable

This article presents an interpretation of the recent evolution of the issue of nationality in contemporary Spain from an historical perspective, beginning with the approval of the 1978 Constitution and the ensuing implementation of the State of the Autonomous Communities at the politico-institutional level. It then goes on to examine the challenges faced by substate and state nationalisms in present-day Spain, which may be summed up in the growing plurality of sentiments of multiple belonging on the part of Spanish citizens, as well as the impact of globalization and foreign immigration. All these phenomena have transformed the conditions in which nationalisms interact, and will require0 political elites to rethink the theoretical frameworks of nationalist doctrines.
