Abstract

Compared to the histories of previous centuries, nineteenth century histories of the Ottoman Empire are voluminous because of the multitude of events and international as well as domestic dynamics. Therefore, it is all the more challenging to cover the century outside a single paradigm such as “modernization” and/or from a linear, progressive perspective. Such approaches inevitably fall into the trap of determinism and intellectually stagnant repetitive narration. A Brief History of the Late Ottoman Empire transcends all of the above simply because it has something new to say. M.
