jumping-off point for the editors' understanding of "discipline"—within the workplace and by the law—that is somewhat underplayed in the introduction and in individual essays. In their articles, several authors (including Lea VanderVelde, William Forbath, Kenneth Casebeer, and Tomlins) show a sophisticated understanding of English history. But the editors do not explore that comparative aspect as explicitly as they might, either in the historiographical or the substantive sense, although they mention the question of American "exceptionalism."
