Highlights • Existing evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities for FNDs are based on different theoretical foundations.• However, there is considerable overlap between modalities regarding tools and targets.• Congruence between treatment rationale and patient characteristics may guide choice of psychotherapeutic modality.• Available treatment modailities may be most useful if applied at different timepoints in the patient’s course of recovery.
