Abstract

Diabetes education is essential to help improve diabetes self-management. Individuals with poorer health literacy have worse diabetes outcomes, and improving health literacy can improve health-related outcomes. With the shift of diabetes education towards virtual delivery as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for health literacy assessment is more pressing because of lack of accessibility to non-verbal cues during remote interactions. This scoping review identifies several health literacy assessment tools that are available for use in people with diabetes and examines the challenges with existing health literacy assessment. It recommends overcoming specific issues for effectively improving healthcare in order to reduce health disparities and promote public health.
