Robert Bringhurst was born in 1946 in Los Angeles and grew up in western North America; he now lives on Quadra Island, off the British Columbia coast. The author of sixteen books of poetry, Bringhurst is also a distinguished philosopher, critic, and typographer. His most recent work, of critical prose, is The Tree of Meaning: Language, Mind and Ecology (2007). He is known as well for his groundbreaking translations and interpretations of Haida art and oral literature, in books such as A Story as Sharp as a Knife (1999).
